The U.S.?
We almost made it… to last place.
Just one more all-nighter and we’ll get there!” 😂-

Such an insightful list. We have lived in a few of these countries and are currently living in Italy. The pace has slowed dramatically and allows for so much more leisure time. It is amazing.

1 month agoHey gang! One more school to feature from my family’s recent university tour trip in Milan, Italy this spring. This time something wildly different than Cattolica and Bocconi – both also in Milan – but also business and creative-industry aligned – IED Design School. Curious? Head over to the blog to read about our visit! – Also, while I’m her…[Read more]

3 months agoMore instability in the Netherlands, I’m afraid. On April 8, 2025 the Dutch Senate voted to support cutbacks to education and science by €500 million. This is just another layer of strife in this country, where education (including English-taught university programs for international students) has been navigating seismic shifts and government thr…[Read more]

Yes — that said, this varies program by program. I’ve read about a few being ended or consolidated; other programs seem to be continuing with little impact. It’s definitely important for families to keep checking for updates on the programs they’re considering!

Indeed, some areas are less affected, such as Engineering. But I think that the overall takeaway is that there is a considerable degree of instability and unpredictability in the Netherlands right now when it comes to higher education for international students. As an advisor, I certainly don’t want this to dissuade students from considering these…[Read more]

4 months agoBig news out of D.C.—Trump just signed an executive order to start dismantling the U.S. Department of Education. While it’s still unclear how far this will go (Congress would have to approve a full shutdown), it could impact everything from student loans to how U.S. diplomas are recognized abroad.
We wrote a quick breakdown of what this could mea…[Read more]

6 months, 1 week agoOne of the regular questions I get as an advisor over here at BTS is, unsurprisingly, around financial aid for US students in Europe. Yes, there are quite a number of schools in the EU that have a federal ID number, and work with FAFSA. (You can apply this filter in our database.) But this might mean that they accept federal loans, and/or accept…[Read more]

Thanks for sharing, Kristin. I’ve been monitoring this closely, as my daughter is planning to start, most likely at University College Groningen next fall. Has BTS connected at all with any of the University Colleges to ask what they think this means for them?

Hi Tara! At this stage, across the board, Dutch universities are outraged, and protesting these proposed changes. Even Dutch companies and businesses have come together this week to protest these proposals. If you ask a university what this means, or will mean for them, right now they will still throw their hands up and say they “don’t know”. I…[Read more]
